Hello Charles,
I also walked to the Jefferson Street school from where I lived on South McKean Street.I was six years old and was late getting to school one day.The doors were locked and I couldn't get in.I sat down on the steps and cried before I made my way home. Those steps are all that's left of the school.
Every time I drive by I remember that sad moment. Richard L.Sanders

Wasn't this the Junior High School briefly...maybe a year or two... in the late '50s? Then the 'high school' became the 'junior hi' when the big new high school opened on the other side of town?

No.The Jefferson Street School was already torn down. The Yellow Brick Building was The Junior High School. After The New Senior High School was Built;the Yellow Brick Building was torn down, rebuilt and incorporated/connected to the Former Senior High School;which is now The Junior High School. An Intermediate High School was also built within close proximity to The Senior High School. The 500 Wing of The Senior High School was sold to be part of The New AVTS (Area Vo-Tech School) which serves all Butler County School Districts. Sorry Richard but you're wrong. My first year in Jr. High starting in Sept 1959 my homeroom was in the basement of the Jefferson St building. And we used the Yellow Brick building too. I'm think the first class to graduate from the "New" High School was '61. I know I was in Sr. High for '62, '63 & 'graduated in '64.

I graduated in '65 and, if my math is correct, I would have been in 7th grade in '59/'60. I remember eating brown bag lunch in this building. We had 'open lunch time' when we could walk uptown in Butler. We would go to Stanley's Donut Shop in the alley and buy donut holes for a penny apiece. I also remember that during lunch time you could go over to the old high school and watch old movies. They probably did that in hopes that we wouldn't go uptown!!

I also graduated in '65 and I do remember being here doing my 7th grade. My home room was on the second floor... corner room towards the front. I remember my first real love(crush). Linda Wolford was her name and her boyfriend really didn't like me. Tried to pound my head in a few times. Those were the days!

I graduated in '64. My seventh grade homeroom was in the Jefferson St. building, my eighth grade homeroom was in the yellow brick building, and my ninth grade homeroom was in the red brick building. We were the first class to go all three years of high school at the new campus on the hill. Does anybody remember swimming class at the old "Y"? Our hair used to freeze walking back to class. Also, does anyone remember walking up the back sidewalk to the new high school? Anyone who lived west of Washington St. had to find their own way to school - no bus!

I remember swimming class at the old "Y" and we had to take the class in the nude, imagine that today. We would walk to the Hot Dog Shop for lunch or run home to the west end. There used to be a Chinese Laundromat beside Kirkpatricks and I think we drove them crazy. One job I had at the red brick building was to take the erasers outside and bang them together to clean the chalk off them. I can still taste the dust.

I went to a school, first grade in Butler. The year was 1956. My teacher was a very mean old lady who's name was Miss Goldblum. I have tried to remember the name of the school, it could of been Jefferson st, not sure but I do remember Miss Goldblum. She would smack my hands with a ruler because I would not spell my first name. I went by Sue, my middle name. I had not learned how to spell Clarissa. There was a Susan in my class so I was not allowed to use Sue. She was forced to retire I was told. She taught my first 3 half sisters before me and we are 10 years apart. Email me at lady0611@cox.net if anyone knows this teacher or this school in 1956-1957.

I remember a Miss Goldman or something similar who was teaching music at Broad Street Elementary. I was unresponsive one morning (I had pneumonia and a 103 degree temp)and she hit me across the face with her pointer. She was a really short women and wore heavy rouge on her face. A real bitch! If that happened today she would be in real trouble.

This happened in the yellow brick building in Jr. High. Mr. Mizerak tapped us on the head with a pointer if we didn't know the answer in Science class. It would have been in 1968 or so. I waited until the next year to tell my dad, and he was really angry which surprised me as he usually didn't do anything when a teacher did something. So, I could pretty much figure what would have happened to Miss Goldman if she had hit me in the face with a pointer. My dad went to Broad Street School. The first day of school, he hid in the little space by the basement window and ran back home.
