Merry-Go-Round ~ Stoughton's Beach

After leaving Alameda Park this carousel we loved went to Stoughton's Beach and after that it was on display at the Smithsonian in D.C. for about seven years and before it was moved to its present location, Old Tucson Studios in Arizona.

When we heard that we were going to Stoughton's Beach, we all lit up with glee. It as such a wonderful place and I can remember going around the bend in the road, loooking down through the trees and seeing the swimming pool where we had such great times. Down over the hill were the "slippery" rocks on which we spent many a happy hour.

Does anybody remember the scary gypsy who told fortunes? She had a little stand or tent on the way to the picnic area? I remember being afraid to walk past her. LOL

Yes! the scary gypsy! Our family had a very basic cabin on Slippery Rock Creek in the mid fifties. A big treat was when they would let us kids off to roller skate at Rock Falls Park. Remember the organ playing music to skate to? Well, back to the gypsy. Either on the way in or the way out, I have definite memories of this snaggly hag standing there bidding us to come into her tent, or whatever it was. Today, at 64 years of age, my brother and I took a drive there to find our old cottage AND Rock Falls Park. So today we were there walking amid the ruins, and one of my comments to my brother was about how frightening that lady was! If someone else has the same memory, then it must be true (that she was frightening). She told our aunt Dorothy that there was a curse on my aunt and for $50.00 & a winter coat she would remove the curse! It was a wonderful walk into the past we had today. Thanks for this site!

I was one of the original workers working with Richard Fry in the summer of 1967 to start refurbishing Alameda which at the time many people did not even know the place existed so near them. Also there that summer were Frank Cherry, Joe Gallagher, Richard Micsell (sp. sorry) and a guy named Jaime. We tore down old cottages from the hillsides and burned them up, built picnic tables and dip stained them, tore copper wire out of the skating rink building and tore down the long building near where the water from the lake stopped near the large pavilion. Good times, will always be in my mind. Always go see the place when back for high school class reunions. 50 years this year!! Bob Hart
