I think that would have been my age in '51. Some of those kids look really familiar, wish it was larger.

Went there for first grade in 1945, I believe the teacher was Mrs. Sutton. I think the bathrooms were in the basement. Good memories from there.

I'm looking at this picture and it appears there are approximitely 40 or so kids in the class! (and they say classrooms are overcrowded now!)lol Center Av School, was that later called Institute Hill? I went there. Mrs. Patterson and Mrs. Silverio for 1st and 2nd grade.

Bathrooms were in the basement. I remember filing down there to duck & cover!

A larger version is here:
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~pabutler/Rm91951.jpg

It is accompanied by a student listing and can be copied in a large format (3k x 3k) pixels. If you go to the site and back up a level or two there are several other Butler Classroom pictures. Hosted by Butler County Genealogical Society.

Center Ave and Institute Hill are two different locations in Butler and therefore two different schools. I went to Center Ave in 1960 for 7th grade. Bussed in from Lick Hill. The jr high was too crowded to hold all the kids from out lying areas too. We had 2 rooms of 7th grade. Mr Wogulmuth's and another one in the basement.(near the bathrooms and the boiler room!). WE had our civil defense practice in the hallway..under the huge glass globe lights that hung from the ceiling by single old chains. If the nukes wouldn't have hurt us...the crashing globes would!

I went to Center Avenue in 1957-58. Ms Ertest was my first grade teacher, I may have spelled her name wrong. I heard she became the principle there later in years. She was a great teacher. I loved her class. We had a sink in the back of the room and a bathroom in our class room. There was a teacher who would monitor us in the cafeteria. She made me eat my beets and I told her they would make me sick if I ate them but she made me eat them anyway and I did get sick. Had to call the janitor to clean it up.
